Story of My Journey to Rishikesh

It is always a pleasure to visit Rishikesh! And although I have come here many times, this is the first travel blog post I am writing about Rishikesh, mainly because there is just so much to write about it and I did not feel that I could do it in just one post-Will do full justice There is so much culture, and so much history, that my plan to write about it has always been delayed. The banks of the holy Ganges in Rishikesh. Truly #incredible India But recently, and during the shortest trip to Rishikesh, I felt a compelling need to write about the city, and it seems the right thing to start with a photoblog. Baby steps, I know.

Rishikesh is the city that roams and overwhelms at the same time.

We spent a lot of time wandering the streets of Rishikesh. The mystical atmosphere gives you a feeling of inner peace just by living and breathing in the city! The holy river Ganga, Sadhus, Yoga, international tourists who like the locals and Hindu mythology here! There is so much to absorb and assimilate here, that just one day can feel like a journey of a lifetime. And that's what I did recently, a day trip to Rishikesh. And trust me, it was the best!

Views of busy streets of Rishikesh.

As everyone knows, Rishikesh is famous as a Hindu pilgrimage center and is considered one of the holiest places in Hindu culture. Rishikesh is located in the foothills of the Himalayas in North India, it is known as The Gateway to Garhwal Himalaya. It is a part of Uttarakhand and is about 45 km from the state capital Dehradun. Rishikesh is also famous as the yoga capital of the world.

Roads of Rishikesh.

The city of Rishikesh is surrounded by the very beautiful Himalayan districts of Tehri Garhwal (I like it and I have written about my offbeat trip to have a new Tehri in Sargdhari), Pauri Garhwal and Haridwar. Hindu saints know better a sage, who has traveled from around the world to Rishikesh since ancient times to meditate in search of higher knowledge, Nirvana.

This holy city is vegetarian by law, and meat and alcohol are not legal here. Cows are revered and protected and they roam freely on the streets. Here is an authority on the internationally renowned Lakshman Jhula:

Rishikesh is known for protecting sacred cows.

Laxman Jhula is one of the most famous attractions in Rishikesh, and it is magnificent! The view of the ghats from below is stunning. Walking across the Ganges on the Laxman swing is something that I absolutely love. It is quiet and powerful and oh-so-exhilarating - all at the same time. Ram Jhula is also equal and Jhula (suspension bridge) is always crowded on both. The two seesaws are pedestrian-only - although scooters and motorcycles use them independently, and as seen above, even cows.

Right next to the Lakshman Jhula is the Yoga Training Center

Rishikesh is also known for white water rafting. The rafting season begins in the month of March and ends in September, and the season sees plenty of young adventure seekers for rafting, kayaking, and other water activities. There are plenty of rafting camps here, and so are trekking kiosks that take you to the Himalayas for camping and hikes.
